Algester is the tradie suburb of the four around it, and the numbers say so
Algester gets lumped in with Sunnybank Hills, Calamvale and Runcorn. It is not much like any of them.
Start with size. Algester is 3.63 square kilometres with 9,020 people. Sunnybank Hills and Calamvale each hold around 18,000. Algester is roughly half the suburb its neighbours are, on half the land.
Then the workforce, which is the part that matters here. 13.9% of working Algester residents are technicians and trades workers and another 9.7% are machinery operators and drivers. That combined 23.6% is the highest of the four suburbs around it, and its professional share at 21.0% is the lowest. Algester is a working suburb in a way its neighbours are not.
It is also the mortgage-belt one. 41.2% of Algester households are paying off a mortgage, the highest of the group, against 26.9% who own outright and 30.7% renting. Median weekly household income is $1,716.
And it is demographically distinct. Algester is the only suburb in this pocket where Chinese is not the leading ancestry. English leads at 24.9%, Australian at 22.5%, Chinese at 15.0%. 54.9% of residents were born in Australia, against roughly 41 to 43% in the three suburbs around it, and 59.3% speak only English at home compared with about 37% in Calamvale. There is a long-standing Pacific and Filipino community, and the Islamic Society of Algester has been established here since 1990.
None of that is trivia. Trades households, mortgages and 2.8 people per house is a very specific storage profile: a ute, a trailer, tools, materials between jobs, and a garage that stopped being a garage some time ago.
Your nearest storage yard is literally across the boundary road, and it locks at 9pm
Storage King Acacia Ridge is at 23 Learoyd Road, and Learoyd Road is the Algester boundary. More than two kilometres of it runs along the edge of the suburb. For a lot of Algester addresses it is the closest storage in existence, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Its published access hours are 5am to 9pm, Monday to Sunday, with the office closed on Sundays and 24 hour access offered only to business accounts.
That 5am to 9pm window is not unique to them. It is the southside standard. Storage Choice at Coopers Plains publishes 5am to 9pm. National Storage Browns Plains publishes 5am to 9pm. Fort Knox Underwood publishes 5am to 9pm. Four different brands, the same sixteen hour window, the same hard eight hour lockout every night.
Ours is 24 hours a day, seven days, on your PIN, included in the price rather than charged as an upgrade. If you finish a job at half past nine, or you are hooking up a trailer before five, that is the entire difference and it is worth more than a few minutes of drive time.
Worth knowing too: Algester itself has no general industrial land, only about 8.5 hectares of low impact industry in the north-west corner fronting Learoyd Road and Wright Place. There is no yard space, no small warehouse market and nowhere for a trade to expand into inside the suburb.
A 1970s estate that is still filling in, with no train and one small centre
Algester was planned in 1968 as Ridgewood Heights, named in 1972, and its state school opened in 1977. It has been growing steadily ever since and it had the fastest population growth of the four suburbs between 2016 and 2021.
The housing is 80.8% separate houses and 16.3% townhouses, with almost no apartments. Median age is 36 and households average 2.8 people. There is no traditional building character overlay anywhere in Algester, so nothing constrains a knockdown, an extension or a rebuild.
What Algester does not have is infrastructure. No railway station, with Sunnybank nearly two and a half kilometres away. No high school, only Algester State School at 200 Ridgewood Road and St Stephen's Catholic Primary at 156 Ridgewood Road, both on the same street. One small district centre, the IGA at 188 Algester Road, on 1.39 hectares. The bus network runs essentially on two roads, Ridgewood Road and Algester Road.
Households here average 1.9 vehicles and get almost everywhere by car. That is the whole texture of the suburb, and it is why driveways fill up.
If you want to know where you are in Algester, read the street signs. The estate is named on two themes: rainforest tree genera and a dense belt of wood names, so Ackama, Alstonia, Bangalow, Booyong, Cardwellia, Endiandra, Helicia, Owenia, Quintinia, alongside Basswood, Corkwood, Icewood, Lancewood, Ridgewood, Silkwood, Stonewood and Whitewood. And a second theme of south-east Queensland mountains: Mount Barney, Mount Maroon, Mount Moogerah, Mount Tamborine, Bartle Frere and Eungella.
Flood: Algester is one of the driest suburbs we serve
We say this on very few pages, so it is worth saying plainly here.
No part of Algester falls inside Council's mapped January 2011 Brisbane River flood extent. Zero hectares. In February 2022, which was a creek and stormwater event as much as a river one, the mapped extent covered about 2.7% of the suburb, and only 0.17% of Algester's residential land was inside it. The affected road length was 301 metres of Triantha Street and short sections of Algester and Ridgewood Roads.
Algester drains 100% to Oxley Creek, and no part of it touches Stable Swamp Creek or Bulimba Creek, whatever a neighbouring suburb's page might tell you.
So if you are storing things because of water, that is very unlikely to be an Algester problem. Space is the Algester problem. We would rather say that than sell you a worry you do not have.
Our yard, for completeness. 675 Beaufighter Ave is outside Council's mapped extents for both 2011 and 2022, inside the 1974 extent, and in Brisbane River flood planning area 5. Not flood-proof, dry through both events in living memory, checkable on Council's maps.
Who in Algester actually rents from us
Trades and machinery operators
Nearly a quarter of the working suburb. Tools, racking, formwork, scaffold, materials between jobs, and the ute and trailer that will not fit beside the house. A container at $349 a month is a fraction of the cost per square metre of the smallest tenancy you could lease, and there is nothing to lease in Algester anyway.
Households mid-renovation or rebuild
No character overlay means no demolition control, so Algester's 1970s and 80s stock gets extended and replaced freely. Those jobs run three to twelve months and month to month with no lock-in is built for a timeline that slips.
Boats, vans, campers and trailers
1.9 vehicles per dwelling before you add anything towed, on estate blocks with limited side access. An open-air bay on sealed bitumen inside a fenced, gated, camera-covered yard is $250 a month, and a bay plus a container together is $599.
Growing families in three and four bedroom houses
2.8 people per household and a median age of 36 means a lot of Algester homes are still adding people rather than losing them. Furniture from a previous place, baby gear between children, and the things you are keeping for the next house all end up in the garage.
What it costs
| Option | What you get | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| 20ft container | About 14m² of floor, 2.4m high, roughly 33m³. Your padlock, sealed bitumen, drive-up | $349/mo |
| Vehicle, boat, caravan or trailer bay | Open-air bay on sealed bitumen inside the gated yard | $250/mo |
| Bay plus container together | The ute or van outside, the tools locked up beside it | $599/mo |
40ft containers by enquiry. Month to month, no bond, no lock-in, 30 days notice. 24/7 gated PIN access included, not an upgrade.

Getting here from Algester
Straight up Beaudesert Road, 11.3 km
Algester Road out to Beaudesert Road, then north through Acacia Ridge to the Archerfield end and onto Beaufighter Avenue. About 16 minutes clear, low twenties in the afternoon. Beaudesert Road is the National Route 13 corridor and it is built for trucks, which matters if you are towing.
From the Learoyd Road side
If you are at the north-west corner of the suburb you are already on the industrial edge. Learoyd Road across to Beaudesert Road, then north. It knocks a couple of minutes off.
If you are towing or driving something big
The yard is sealed bitumen throughout and takes a full-size delivery vehicle. A pantech, a tilt tray or a tandem trailer with plant on it all turn comfortably. No height restrictions, no lifts, no corridors, no ticketed gate. Containers sit at ground level on timber blocks, so you reverse to the door and load straight in.
When the yard across Learoyd Road is the better call
If you need a small unit, you access it inside business hours, and you want to be there in four minutes rather than sixteen, take Storage King. We will say the same thing on the phone.
Come to us when you need a whole container rather than a room, when you want open hardstand for something on wheels, or when your access happens outside 5am to 9pm. For a trade running early starts and late finishes, that last one usually decides it on its own.
And the honest limits: our containers are ventilated, not air conditioned, with no power inside, so nothing temperature sensitive and nothing needing a bench or a light.
What you are actually renting
A 20ft shipping container on sealed bitumen, elevated on timber blocks, at ground level, with your padlock and nobody else's key. Fully fenced and gated, more than 30 cameras, entry 24/7 by PIN. No shared corridors, no stairs, no lifts.
Storage Land holds a 5.0 rating on Google across more than 200 reviews.
Real questions from Algester customers
I am a chippy and I finish jobs after 9pm sometimes. Storage King is on my boundary road but it is shut. What do I do?
That is the exact gap we exist in, and it is why a lot of Algester trades are with us despite being closer to Learoyd Road.
Storage King Acacia Ridge publishes 5am to 9pm and offers 24/7 only to business accounts. Storage Choice, National Storage Browns Plains and Fort Knox Underwood all publish the same 5am to 9pm window. Our gate is on your PIN 24 hours a day, seven days, included in the $349.
Practically, the drive-up matters as much as the hours for a trade. Racking, formwork, scaffold, compressors and stock come straight off the ute or trailer at ground level with no lift, no corridor and no trolley. If the trailer needs parking too, a bay is $250 and the combination is $599.
Can I run stock in and out for a small business, and is there power?
You can store and you can come and go at any hour, but you cannot trade from the site and there is no power inside the containers. No lighting, no bench, no charging. It is a locked steel shed, not a workshop.
For stock, packaging, racking, seasonal lines and tools it works very well, and 33 cubic metres at $349 a month with no bond and no lock-in is a long way below the cost per square metre of the smallest industrial tenancy near here. Algester has essentially nothing to lease anyway, with only a small pocket of low impact industry on the Learoyd Road edge.
Pallets are fine. Bring a pallet jack and a ramp, or a forklift, and the yard has room for a delivery truck to turn.
We are extending rather than moving. How long do people take a container for?
Three to six months is typical for an extension and longer for a rebuild. Algester has no demolition control anywhere in the suburb, so the bigger jobs here often go all the way to a knockdown, and those run closer to a year.
Month to month with no lock-in and no bond is the point. Build timelines slip and they slip longer, not shorter, and you should not be paying for a fixed term you guessed at the start. You give 30 days notice when the house is ready.
Pack with a walkway down one side rather than filling the container wall to wall. You will want the door hardware or a box of tiles mid-build, usually early in the morning.
Does Algester flood? Should I be moving things pre-emptively?
Almost certainly not, and we would rather tell you that than take your money.
No part of Algester is inside Council's mapped January 2011 Brisbane River flood extent. In February 2022 the mapped extent covered about 2.7% of the suburb and 0.17% of its residential land, essentially a stretch of Triantha Street. Algester drains entirely to Oxley Creek and sits well up.
Check your own address on Council's Flood Awareness map if you want certainty, but if you are in Algester, storage is a space decision rather than a water one.
Can I keep a caravan and get it out before dawn for a trip?
Yes. Caravans, boats, campers, trailers and work vehicles go on open-air bays on sealed bitumen inside the gated yard at $250 a month, and entry is on your PIN at any hour with no booking, no notice and no access fee.
The yard is flat sealed bitumen all the way through, so hitching up and reversing out in the dark is straightforward rather than a manoeuvre on gravel. Plenty of van owners take a bay and a container together for $599 all up, so the annexe, levellers, camp kitchen and chairs live with the van instead of taking the garage back.
What will you not accept?
Not accepted: dangerous goods, fuel, gas bottles, bulk solvents, anything flammable or hazardous, and anything perishable or living. Strongly discouraged: wine, canvas artwork, medication, vinyl records and electronics that genuinely matter, because ventilated is not air conditioned and there is no power inside.
Furniture, tools, stock, whitegoods, mattresses and boxed household goods all store well. For a long store: everything off the floor on pallets or ply, breathable covers rather than sealed plastic, a moisture absorber, and fridge and washing machine doors propped open.
