Moving to Brisbane from Sydney or Melbourne: The Interstate Move Guide (and Where Your Furniture Goes First)

Published
Most interstate moves to Brisbane have the same awkward middle: your Sydney or Melbourne lease ends on one date, the Brisbane place you want is not signed yet, and a truck full of furniture is somewhere on the Pacific or Newell Highway. This guide is about getting that middle right. It covers the order to do things in, the removalist decisions that actually change the cost, and the single move that makes the whole thing calmer: putting your furniture into a container on the southside before you have an address, so you can house-hunt without a truck on the clock.
The short version
- Book the removalist or backload before you book anything else. Interstate trucks fill up, especially December-January and around school holidays.
- Decide where the furniture lands before it leaves. "The new house" only works if settlement or lease start is locked in with a week of slack. Otherwise it lands in storage.
- Do the paperwork that has deadlines first: Queensland driver licence and rego transfer, school enrolment, utilities.
- Arrive light. Two suitcases, the car, the essentials box. Everything else goes straight from the truck into a 20ft container and comes out when you have keys.
Where does your furniture go when you do not have a Brisbane house yet?
This is the question that decides whether the move is tidy or expensive. Four options, honestly:
| Option | What it costs you | When it works |
|---|---|---|
| Removalist holds it in their depot | Often priced per week plus a second delivery fee; your goods are on their schedule, not yours | A gap of a few days |
| Family garage | Free, until it is not, and it is rarely 3-4 bedrooms of space | Small loads, short gaps |
| Indoor self storage unit | A monthly rate plus, at some chains, compulsory insurance, admin fees and staffed-hours access | Boxes and small furniture |
| Your own 20ft container, drive-up | $349 a month at Storage Land, no bond, no admin fee, 30 days notice to leave, 24/7 access | A whole house, any gap from two weeks to a year |
A 20ft container holds the contents of a typical 3-4 bedroom home. The removalist backs the truck to the container door, unloads once, and you are done paying for a truck. When you find a place, you empty it in your own time, over as many trips as you like, at whatever hour suits. That last part matters more than it sounds when you are also starting a new job.
Timing an interstate move to Brisbane
Work backwards from the day the truck leaves:
- 6-8 weeks out: get three removalist quotes (full service, shared load or backload) and book. Give notice on your current lease. Start the declutter: everything you sell or donate in Sydney or Melbourne is something you do not pay to freight 900-1,700km.
- 4 weeks out: decide on storage or direct delivery. If it is storage, book the container now so the removalist has a delivery address on the paperwork. Redirect mail. Line up schools and childcare.
- 2 weeks out: confirm the truck date and the delivery window. Pack an "open first" box per person. Arrange final meter reads and bond inspection.
- Move week: the truck loads. You drive or fly. Furniture goes into the container on arrival, or to the house if the keys are real.
- First fortnight in Brisbane: licence, rego, GP, bank address, electoral roll. House hunt without a deadline hanging over you.
The week-by-week version of the packing and admin side is in our moving house checklist. If your sale and purchase dates do not line up, the specific answer is in storage between house sales.
Removalist, backload or do it yourself?
Full-service interstate removalist: one truck, your goods only, packed and unpacked if you pay for it. Simplest, dearest, and the only sensible option for a large house.
Backloading or shared load: your goods share a truck already heading north. Cheaper, but the delivery window is wide (often days) and the truck arrives when it arrives. This is exactly the case where a storage container saves you: the truck can unload into the container any day, with the gate PIN, and you are not sitting in an empty house waiting.
Hire truck and drive: Sydney to Brisbane is about 900km and ten hours of driving, Melbourne to Brisbane about 1,700km and two long days. It can work for a small load. For a family house, the fuel, the second driver, the hire and the two days off usually land close to a backload quote without the sleep.
The Queensland admin list
- Transfer your driver licence and vehicle registration to Queensland within the period the Department of Transport and Main Roads sets for new residents. Check the current rule on their site before you move.
- Update your address with the ATO, your bank, Medicare, the electoral roll, your super fund and insurers.
- Tell your contents insurer if the goods are going into storage first. Some policies require notice before the goods move - see self storage insurance.
- School and childcare enrolments run on catchments. Sort the suburb shortlist before the enrolment, not after.
Why people moving to Brisbane store on the southside
Storage Land is at 675 Beaufighter Avenue, Archerfield, in the industrial precinct beside Archerfield Airport. It is 5-20 minutes from more than 40 southside suburbs and is a few minutes from the Ipswich Motorway, which is the way most interstate trucks come in. The yard is sealed bitumen, every container is drive-up, the gate is open 24/7 on your own PIN, and there is no bond, no admin fee and no lock-in. If you end up renting in the inner south, the Logan corridor or the western suburbs, the container is on the way.
Not sure the southside is where you will land? It does not matter much. A container is somewhere to put a house while you work that out, and you empty it when you are ready. Pricing is on the pricing page and you can book online in a few minutes.
Moving to Brisbane FAQs
How much does it cost to move from Sydney to Brisbane?
It depends entirely on volume, service level and the time of year, so get three quotes for your actual load. The one cost you can fix in advance is the gap between trucks and houses: a 20ft container at Storage Land is $349 a month and holds a 3-4 bedroom home.
Can a removalist deliver straight into a storage container?
Yes. Give the removalist the yard address and your gate PIN, and they back the truck to your container door. Drive-up means no lift bookings and no trolley distances.
How long can I keep my furniture in storage while I look for a house?
As long as you need. The agreement is month to month with 30 days notice. Plenty of people take two months, some take a year.
Is Brisbane humidity a problem for stored furniture?
It is a factor, which is why our containers are ventilated and sit on sealed bitumen rather than dirt. Pack timber and fabric clean and dry and read how to prevent mould in container storage.
Do you take interstate bookings before I arrive?
Yes. Book online, get the PIN by email, and hand it to your removalist. You do not need to be in Brisbane for the truck to unload.
