Working out what size you actually need

Most people either overestimate and pay for air, or underestimate and end up making three trips. A rough guide that holds up:

  • A one or two bedroom flat fits comfortably in a 20ft container with room to walk in.
  • A three or four bedroom house also fits a 20ft container in most cases. Ours are roughly 6m x 2.4m, about 14 square metres, and take three to four bedrooms of furniture stacked properly.
  • A whole house plus a vehicle is a container and an open-air bay, which is the $599 combo.
  • A few boxes and a bike is not us. You would be paying for a container and using a corner of it, and a small unit closer to home will suit you better.

If you are between two sizes, measure the largest single item rather than counting boxes. A three-seater lounge, a fridge and a mattress set the constraint, not the cartons.

Packing a container so it holds what you think it holds

A 20ft container holds a house if you load it like one and much less if you do not.

  • Heavy and flat at the bottom: whitegoods, mattresses on their side against a wall, table tops upright.
  • Build up in columns rather than piling loose. Boxes of the same size stack; mixed sizes collapse.
  • Dismantle bed frames and table legs. It is twenty minutes that buys a square metre.
  • Leave a walkway down one side if you will need to get at things while it is stored.
  • Label the ends of boxes, not the tops, because once they are stacked the tops are gone.
  • Fully dry everything fabric before it goes in. Damp packed away in Brisbane is the single most common cause of ruined goods.

Life events people store for

Moving with a gap between settlement dates. Renovating, where the house has to empty for six weeks. Selling, where the agent wants half the furniture gone before photos. Downsizing, where the new place cannot take everything at once. A deceased estate that needs somewhere neutral while it is sorted. Working away or heading overseas. Separating households. Storing a student's things over a long break.

They have one thing in common: none of them come with a firm end date. That is the argument for month to month, no lock-in and no bond, rather than signing a term you have to guess at.

Access, and who else can get in

24/7 gated PIN access, and you drive up to your own container door rather than walking a trolley down a shared corridor. You can name an alternate contact on your agreement, so a partner, family member or a removalist can collect something without you being there. Useful if you are away when the new place is finally ready.

What we are not suited to

There is no power to the containers, so nothing that has to stay plugged in. They are ventilated with a 12-vent system, not climate controlled, so anything that genuinely needs a held temperature belongs in an indoor facility. And no food, sealed or otherwise.
